Chapter Twenty-Two

Reflections

Julian had not only escorted me upstairs, but also followed me into the bathroom.

My mind was so full from earlier, I hadn’t even noticed him at first. It was only after I turned on the water that I realized he remained in the room.

He stood near the door, shifting uncomfortably. His arms were crossed, and his focus fixated on the window on the other side of the room.

“Julian!” I snapped, pointing at him.

He jumped, and an instant later he was in front of me. “What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong?” I couldn’t keep the disbelief from my voice. “What’s wrong is that you can’t stay in here.” Grabbing his arm, I attempted to drag him toward the door. “There’s only glass separating the shower from the rest of the room.”

“I know,” Julian replied, shooting a curious look toward the shower. He hadn’t moved an inch despite my attempts to pull him forward.

I froze, dropping my hand from his arm. Perhaps he hadn’t realized. “I would be naked.”

“I know,” he repeated, his face darkening. His gaze turned from mine and he stared at some point over my shoulder. And when he spoke, his voice was a pitch lower than usual. “People are naked while bathing. I’m trying not to think about that. The last time you spent any length of time away from us, you were attacked.”

Why did he have to remind me?

“I can make it quick,” I offered. But now that he mentioned it, I knew he was right. There was no promising that ‘quick’ would be quick enough to prevent another attack. Perhaps this was a bad idea. I could always just shoot by the dorm showers tomorrow.

“But I am the most professional of our group,” Julian continued, his voice tight. “I’m not going to lie. I have noticed the way you’ve been moving throughout the evening. You’re still hurting from the other night. And Damen told me that he fell on top of you. I’ve been remiss in checking to see if you were all right. So, on top of preventing you from gaining further injury, you do need to soak in this,” he said, brandishing a small jar.

“Why didn’t you say something before I turned the shower on?” I growled, eyeing the mixture. And how had they seen through my excellent acting skills?

Julian shrugged. “I wanted to see how long it’d take you to notice.”

I see. He was testing my observation skills. I could respect that. Surely he would have warned me before I actually took my clothes off.

I grabbed the container and turned away, first shutting off the shower and turning the tub on instead. “I still don’t know why you have to be in this room.”

“It’s very foamy, and it will help with your bruises,” he said. “Your modesty is safe. But I can’t stand the thought of you getting hurt again.”

Something about his tone brought to mind his words from the other night. He said that seeing Finn hurting me brought up bad memories. Was it
